Why Indian-Americans Should Work to Ensure John McCain Occupy the Oval Office?

Sounds Strange? I am sure it must be to many. But to maintain not only the continuity but give it a greater push, I believe, a Republican in the Oval Office at this time and curve of the India-U.S. relations is better suited for India's national interest. A Democratic in the White House would mean a complete dismantle of the present administration which has worked zealously under a president committed to help India become a global power. The Republican presumptive nomination John McCain has publicly endorsed the Bush administration's policies towards India, including the nuclear deal. Given the political deadlock in India on the Indo-US Nuclear Deal, it is possible that the deal may not get through during the present administration's term. The Democratic presumptive nominee Barack Obama was an opponent of the deal who has already stated to mean that India has taken American for ride on this issue. If he is elected to the White House, the chances are that the deal may not see the light of the day in its present form. Not good for India. And as an Indian, therefore, a Democrat in the Oval Office is not a good proposition. Secondly, the current US Ambassador to India is a good friend of India who has friends in both the NDA and UPA coalitions. He is among the main architects of the Indo-US Nuclear Deal and an ardent supporter of India in the present administration. If McCain is to be the next president of the United States, he is likely to continue for another term, which is like having India’s man in the White House. Let us for a moment not talk about whether the Indo-US Nuclear Deal is good or bad for India. The larger interest here is that this deal, if it is inked, will open new avenues of collaborative opportunities in the field of science and technology with the United States, which, notwithstanding you agree or not, is the most advanced nation in the world in those areas.

I am not against Democrats, but at the present moment, Republicans are our best bet. We are all selfish and work for our national interest. So must all Indian Americans. They should rally behind McCain and work harder for his victory, particularly in those “Swing” states which together have about 113 electors who can shift balance in McCain’s favor. So Work for and Vote for John McCain.
